UOB EVOL Card Review – 8% cashback online/contactless with $600 min. spend

In a previous article, we talked about the UOB Absolute Cashback Card, offering 1.7% unlimited cashback with no minimum spend and no exclusions.

It’s a phenomenal card in many aspects, and it’s great for those who don’t spend a lot but still want to accumulate a higher than average level of cashback for their spending.

However, bigger spenders might find 1.7% cashback still a little low for their liking – is there a card that can optimise your spending further and make it more worthwhile?

Well, luckily UOB introduced the new UOB EVOL Card.

The UOB EVOL Card is good card for a digital lifestyle, so it’s most suitable for those who spend online or through contactless payments.

The previous iteration of this card was known as the UOB YOLO Card but UOB has made several improvements to the card in many ways.

For instance, 8% cashback can now be earned both on weekdays and weekends, and across more categories of spend.

There are 3 main benefits to the new UOB EVOL Card:

  • 8% cashback on online and mobile contactless spend
  • No annual fees if you make 3 transactions monthly
  • Earn up to 2.5% interest when combined with the UOB One Account

8% cashback on online and mobile contactless

The UOB EVOL card offers 8% cashback for online and mobile contactless transactions, this includes dining, entertainment, shopping, online shopping, Grab, Fave, GoJek and more. Online spend basically refers to any spend made via the Internet.

Mobile contactless spend also gives you 8% cashback which includes any transaction on Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung and Fitbit Pay.

For other spending categories, you will earn 0.3% cashback instead.

There is one criteria that you must take note to qualify for 8% cashback: you need to spend a minimum of $600 in the month, which is relatively easy to hit for a young working adult on conventional shopping, dining, Grab rides and mobile phone bills.

There is a cashback cap of $60 split between 3 categories of online, mobile and other spend, about $20 per category, which roughly equates to $250 of spending per category for online and mobile, and $6667 for other spend.

Cashback illustration

Let’s take an example of a sample month spending with the UOB EVOL Card.

We need to spend a minimum of $600 in the month, and the cashback is capped at $20 per category (i.e. spending of $250 for online and another $250 for mobile at 8%).

The categories are pretty straightforward and easy to remember, but tracking spend for each category might take a little bit of work.

No annual fees when you make 3 transactions monthly

You do not have to pay annual fees when you make a minimum of 3 transactions on your UOB EVOL Card every month for 12 months before your annual fee date.

Otherwise, annual fees for the UOB EVOL card is S$192.60, and waived in the first year.

Earn up to 2.5% interest when combined with the UOB One Account

The last benefit of this card is that if you already hold a UOB One account, you can earn up to 2.5% interest on your balance with a minimum of $500 card spend plus salary credit or GIRO payments.

Since the $600 minimum spend for this card is higher than the $500 minimum card spend for the UOB One account, you can simultaneously meet both criteria in one go with your monthly spending.

Overall thoughts

When evaluating credit cards, I particularly like those that fit my current spending habits and provide great value to the consumer without too much overhead.

The new UOB credit cards like the UOB Absolute Card and this UOB EVOL Card are delightful in this regard as they do not impose crazy minimum spending criteria and make the cashback – 8% for the UOB EVOL Card – worthwhile.

I’d say if your monthly spending is mostly on online and contactless payments, and you spend at least $600 a month, getting both UOB Cards would cover a lot of situations and get you the best bang for the buck with little spending commitments.

  1. There’s a caveat to this for slightly higher spenders: cashback is capped at $20 per category. I reckon other cards such as Citi SMRT (5% cashback without spending category cap) is more useful for ppl or couples (in my case) who spend at least $800 monthly.

Also, while ignoring the ‘Other Spend’ category since that’s only 0.3% cashback, one needs to effectively max the spending *evenly* across the 2 other online and contactless spend categories to get the full $40. More likely than not, one category would be more utilized and the other would be underutilized…. making it not a guarantee to get the full $40.

It’s still a good card but just my 2 cents on the considerations to bear in mind.
